Which of these snakes is NOT found in Australia? |
Last Week: Which animal, introduced by Europeans, became a major pest, leading to a 5,600km fence across Australia?
Answer: Rabbit
In the 19th century, European settlers introduced rabbits to Australia, initially for hunting and nostalgic reminders of home. By 1859, a small release of 24 rabbits by Thomas Austin in Victoria sparked an ecological disaster. With no natural predators and ideal conditions, rabbit populations exploded, spreading across the continent at an estimated 100 km per year. By the early 20th century, they were a major pest, devastating crops, grazing lands, and native ecosystems, causing millions in agricultural losses and contributing to soil erosion.
To combat this, Australia constructed the Rabbit-Proof Fence, a massive barrier stretching over 5,600 km, primarily in Western Australia. Begun in 1901 and completed in 1907, it aimed to protect farmland by blocking rabbit migration.
