If you’ve ever walked past the 14 Pieces sculpture on North Terrace, you’ve probably seen the water flowing over the stone formations—but did you know it’s inspired by an ancient marine reptile?

Created by local artists Angela and Hossein Valamanesh, the 14 granite pieces represent the fossilized vertebrae of an Ichthyosaur, a dolphin-like predator that swam in Australia’s inland seas 120 million years ago. The holes in the top of each piece mimic the creature’s spinal column, while the flowing water symbolizes excavation, conservation, and time itself.

Installed in 2005 as part of the North Terrace revitalisation, 14 Pieces replaced the old Lavington Bonython fountain. So next time you pass by, take a moment—what looks like a simple water feature is actually a tribute to Adelaide’s prehistoric past.
