🏅 More Support for SA Athletes

South Australia’s only warship, HMCS Protector, was built in response to fears of a Russian attack during the late 19th century. Launched in 1884, this heavily armed flat-iron gunboat was designed to defend SA’s coastline and protect its ports. It was the largest gunboat ordered by an Australian colony, featuring an 8-inch Armstrong gun, Gatling machine guns, and a reinforced hull.

Though Protector never saw combat in SA waters, it played a significant role in three major conflicts. In 1900, it was sent to China to assist British forces in suppressing the Boxer Rebellion. After Federation, it became part of the Royal Australian Navy, serving in World War I as a patrol vessel and minesweeper. Later, it was repurposed for civilian use before being reactivated for World War II by the US Army—only to be damaged in a collision and decommissioned for good.

Since 1945, Protector’s hull has rested at Heron Island as a breakwater, where it remains a relic of SA’s maritime past. Today, efforts to digitally preserve and study the ship highlight its importance as the last of its kind in the world.
