Last edition, I asked if you guys would be cool with me adding some Aussie-wide content to the Trivia and Did You Know history segments, and 61% of you voted yes—but with a few conditions based on the feedback I got.

From what I received, you’re more than happy to read about some Aussie-wide stuff as long as it isn’t state-specific to anywhere but South Australia, which I totally get.

So, you’re okay with reading about things like all the other types of wildlife found across Australia and its history, just as long as it’s not zeroed in on another state.

The Thorny Devil, a small lizard native to South Australia, has a remarkable method for staying hydrated in one of the driest environments near SA’s outskirts. Between its thorny scales are tiny grooves that act as channels, drawing water—such as morning dew, rain, or even moisture from damp sand—directly to its mouth.

This adaptation allows the Thorny Devil to survive in regions where water sources like creeks or dams are scarce, especially during prolonged dry spells. Researchers have found that these grooves use capillary action, a process where water moves upward against gravity, enabling the lizard to collect enough moisture in just a few minutes to sustain itself for days.
