The Quest for Australia’s Mythical Inland Sea!

Back in the 1800s, early European explorers in Australia were convinced a vast inland sea lay hidden in the heart of the continent. The idea stemmed from the westward-flowing rivers like the Macquarie and Darling, which they believed must empty into a great body of water. British explorer Charles Sturt was so certain of this that in 1844, he set off from Adelaide with a team of 15 men, 11 horses, 30 bullocks, 200 sheep—and a whaleboat! They dragged this heavy boat over 3,500 kilometers through the scorching outback, battling dehydration, scurvy, and the harsh desert, all in search of a sea that didn’t exist. Sturt’s journey, though grueling, helped map the interior, revealing the stark reality of the Red Centre instead of the dreamed-of ocean.
