Kangaroo Island was South Australia’s first European settlement in 1836, chosen for its isolation and strategic location. However, settlers soon faced harsh conditions—poor soil, limited freshwater, and difficulty farming—forcing many to relocate to the mainland. This simple baked clay brick, found on the island and donated in 1934, is a rare relic of that short-lived colony. It represents not only the early struggles of South Australia’s first settlers but also the resilience of those who remained, shaping the island’s unique history.
