🦘Fresh Food At SA Markets

Markets, family outdoor movies and fin parties!

Morning Adelaidians 👋

Keen to meet some of you at the @besocialadelaide event this afternoon.

An Adelaide Insider member raised some really good feedback in the last edition about how Monday’s edition doesn’t give enough time to plan for events happening on Monday itself.

This is a good cretic I hadn’t thought of. The reason I’ve had the newsletter come out on Monday is because it’s the start of the week, and I thought it was a great time for people to see what’s on. I avoided Sunday mornings because it’s most people’s day off, and I figured they’d rather be doing other things—that’s just my theory, but I haven’t actually asked you guys! So, I’ve got 3 options for a solution to this😀

Which solution would you prefer?

📡 SA Water’s Satellite Leak Detection

Gum trees have been part of South Australia’s landscape for over 50 million years? Fossil evidence from the Flinders Ranges, specifically from the Namba Formation near Lake Frome, reveals eucalypt pollen and leaf impressions dating back to the Eocene epoch (around 56-34 million years ago). This was a time when Australia’s climate was wetter, but as the continent drifted north and dried out, eucalypts adapted to survive SA’s increasingly arid conditions.

These ancient survivors, part of the Eucalyptus genus, developed key traits to thrive in South Australia’s harsh environment. Their sclerophyllous (tough, leathery) leaves reduce water loss, while their lignotuber—a woody swelling at the base—stores energy to regrow after droughts or fires, common in regions like the Flinders Ranges and Mount Lofty Ranges. Some species, like the River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), found along the Murray River, have roots that can extend over 20 meters deep to tap into groundwater, a crucial adaptation for SA’s dry climate.

Eucalypts also played a role in SA’s geological story. During the Miocene (23-5 million years ago), as Australia’s aridification intensified, eucalypts spread across SA, outcompeting other vegetation. Today, SA is home to over 70 eucalypt species, including the SA Blue Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon), the state’s floral emblem since 1969.
