Adelaide’s Elder Park Rotunda was a gift from a millionaire!

Back in the 1880s, Adelaide City Council wanted to beautify the River Torrens, turning it into a scenic lake with an esplanade. Part of the plan included a grand rotunda for live music—but they didn’t have the money to build it. Enter Sir Thomas Elder, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist, who, while holidaying in the UK, heard about the idea and decided to make it happen!

Elder ordered a stunning octagonal bandstand from Glasgow’s famous Macfarlane’s Saracen Foundry, had it shipped to Adelaide, and even donated extra funds to prepare the land. The rotunda officially opened on November 28, 1882, with 3,000 people gathering for a night of music, boat parades, and celebrations. A special "Rotunda March" was even composed for the occasion!

Over the years, the Elder Park Rotunda has hosted countless concerts, events, and festivals, becoming one of Adelaide’s most iconic landmarks.

🏪 Extended Shopping Hours for Festival Season

To accommodate the influx of festival-goers, Adelaide’s CBD retailers can now stay open until 6 pm on Saturdays from February 15 to March 22. Last year, extended hours boosted foot traffic in Rundle Mall by 22%.

🌎 SA Government Backs Geothermal Startup

Local startup CoilRig has received a $450,000 grant to develop technology for cheaper and more efficient geothermal heat pumps. The innovation aims to reduce installation costs, making renewable heating and cooling more accessible.
