The Story Behind Rundle Mall’s Bronze Pigs

Rundle Mall’s four bronze pigs have been a beloved Adelaide icon since 1999, bringing a touch of fun and curiosity to the city. Officially known as A Day Out, the sculptures were created by Marguerite Derricourt after winning a national competition held by the Adelaide City Council. Inspired by Florence’s famous Il Porcellino, Derricourt wanted to capture the playful nature of pigs while making them interactive for the public.

Each pig has a unique personality. Oliver rummages through a bin, his snout surrounded by bronzed rubbish. Truffles sits contentedly on the pavement. Augusta sniffs at the ground, and Horatio trots along, as if on an adventure. Their names were chosen through a public competition, ensuring locals had a hand in their story.

Initially, there were concerns about safety—particularly Oliver’s tail, which was later modified—but the pigs quickly won over Adelaideans and visitors alike. Over the years, they’ve become a favourite meeting point, a must-visit for tourists, and a cherished part of Rundle Mall’s identity.
