Beloved lounge bar Korked is reopening in Semaphore with ocean views and its signature relaxed vibe. The new venue promises live music, local wines, and tapas in a welcoming seaside setting.

Did you know the Captain Charles Sturt statue in Victoria Square, unveiled in 1916, isn’t your typical frozen-in-time monument? While most statues of the era stand rigid, like they’re waiting for a bus that never comes, Sturt’s caught in motion—hand raised, shielding his eyes as if scanning the horizon. Sculptor Charles Web Gilbert crafted this “most alive” figure in Adelaide, as critics raved, to echo Sturt’s relentless spirit. It’s a snapshot of his grueling 1829-1830 expedition down the Murray River, where, half-blind and sun-scorched, he chased the myth of an inland sea, only to find dust and disappointment.

The timing adds another layer. Plonked in Tarntanyangga/Victoria Square—a Kaurna ceremonial site turned colonial hub—the statue landed during World War I’s chaos, funded by a public hungry for heroes. Sturt, who’d died in 1869 after a life of bold gambles, became a symbol of endurance, his statue gave a morale boost for the city.
