The Emu War (1932)

Most Australians have heard of the 1932 Emu War — the bizarre moment when the military was deployed against a mob of giant birds in Western Australia. But what’s often overlooked is that it wasn’t a joke at the time. Thousands of emus were tearing through wheat farms in the Campion district, smashing fences and flattening crops at a time when ex-soldier farmers were already reeling from drought, debt, and the Great Depression. Desperate for help, they petitioned the federal government — and in response, Defence Minister Sir George Pearce sent soldiers armed with two Lewis machine guns, led by Major G.P.W. Meredith.

The plan went downhill fast. Emus, it turned out, were faster, smarter, and much harder to hit than expected. The soldiers couldn’t get close enough before the birds scattered — and even when they were hit, many simply kept running. One soldier reportedly said the emus had "bulletproof feathers." In their first attempt, the troops ended just a few hundred out of an estimated 20,000 emus. The press had a field day, calling the campaign a national embarrassment. After weeks of failure, the operation was pulled. A second attempt later that year didn’t fare much better. Meredith would later quip: “If we had a military division with the bullet-carrying capacity of these birds, it would face any army in the world.”

What most people don’t know is that the emu problem didn’t end there. The birds continued to damage farmland for years, but instead of military force, the government turned to bounty payments. Between 1945 and 1960, more than 285,000 emus were culled under this system — with far greater success. While the Emu War is often treated as a meme or a punchline, it was rooted in real hardship. It also serves as a reminder that nature doesn’t always lose, even when faced with guns and generals.
